Walking holidays could be in demand in 2010

More than 6 in 10 of those questioned by a holiday company admitted they enjoyed taking to their local walking trails at least once a week.

Of the 1 000 people surveyed by HF Holidays, 11% said they walk every day, with 26% dusting off their walking boots as many as three times a week.

Brian Smith, HF Holidays’ Chief Executive, said: ‘Walking is the most popular activity in the UK. And strong demand for 2010 holidays suggests that an increasing number of people are taking up walking as a way to keep fit and enjoy the great outdoors.’

Many of the firm’s customers are aged over 50, perhaps indicating that this is the age group most likely to book a walking holiday in a National Park, such as the Lake District or North York Moors.

The survey also revealed that 17% of Britons have only taken up walking within the last five years.

The Lake District, which includes some of Britain’s most popular walking trails, is – at 2 292 sq km – the country’s largest National Park. The Lake District has already seen an increase in holiday bookings for 2010, which could indicate the nation becoming more active. The Lakes has plenty to offer people of all ages, and there is a huge variety of Lake District accommodation.
